Back in February this year Volvo revealed the all-new V40 premium hatchback and now they have unveiled a more rugged version of the model, dubbed Cross Country. It is distinguished by a more masculine appearance with a contrasting dark front bumper, vertical daytime running lights, honeycomb mesh grille and sculpted, contrasting sills. The driver rides 40mm higher in comparison to the standard model, while the wheel choices are the same ones as for the V70 (up to 19-inch).

The Volvo V40 Cross Country can be powered by a 2.5-liter, five-cylinder T5 engine that generates 254 bhp (187 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque, with a 29 lb-ft (40 Nm) of overboost delivered during acceleration. This power unit is linked to a 6-speed automatic gearbox, allowing the car to do the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in 6.1 seconds and have a fuel consumption of 7.8 liters / 100 km. This T5 engine is also offered in the smaller 2.0-liter variant with 213 bhp (157 kW) and 221 lb-ft (300 Nm) but only for select markets.

Another engine choice would have to be the 1.6-liter GTDi T4 with 180 bhp (132 kW) and a peak torque of 199 lb-ft (270 Nm), including the 22 lb-ft (30 Nm) overboost. Fitted with this engine, the V40 Cross Country consumes 5.5 liters / 100 km and has CO2 emissions of 129 g/km. In select markets, the T4 is offered in a 2.0-liter 5-cylinder configuration with 180 bhp (132 kW) and 221 lb-ft (300 Nm) of torque. The T4 can be mated to either a 6-speed Powershift automatic transmission or to a 6-speed manual gearbox.

As for diesels, we find the 2.0-liter, 5-cylinder D4 turbodiesel with 177 bhp (130 kW) and a peak torque of 295 lb-ft (400 Nm), enough for a 0-62 mph sprint in 8.3 seconds with the automatic gearbox or 0.3 seconds more with the manual. It has a fuel consumption of 4.4 liters / 100 km and CO2 emissions of 117 g/km for the manual, while with the automatic gearbox it consumes 5.2 liters / 100 km with 137 g/km CO2 emissions. There’s also the 2.0-liter D3 that produces 150 bhp and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque available with both transmissions.

Another diesel is the D2 1.6-liter with 115 bhp (84 kW) and 210 lb-ft (285 Nm), including the 11 lb-ft (15 Nm) overboost. Mated to a 6-speed manual and stop/start, it enables the V40 Cross Country to have a fuel consumption of just 3.8 liters / 100 km and CO2 emissions of 99 g/km.
